Community College

Giving you all the tools you need to succeed on the community college path focusing on the transferring aspect.

Transfering to a UC

Now we are here to talk about community college and the many opportunities that it offers.  Specifically the opportunities regarding transferring. There are plenty of community colleges to choose from, but specifically, we looked at Orange Community College.  At OCC there is a program called TAG (Transfer Admission Guarantee). If students meet the campus-specific TAG requirements and submit both TAG and UC applications, they will be guaranteed enrollment at the UC of their choice. Some of the UC schools that are under that one can choose from are Davis, Irvine, Merced, Riverside, Santa Barbara, and Santa Cruz. Specifically, some of the requirements of UC Davis include having been enrolled California Community College during the previous spring term, plan to continue enrollment at the CCC through the spring term prior to enrolling, and have at least 30 semester UC -transferable units.

Transfering to a CSU

Another program that is offered to help transfer students is the ADT for CSU schools. This program also guarantees admission to any CSU for any students who complete an “associates degree for transfer.”  For this program, there need to be 60 transferable semester units with a minimum of 12 units completed at OCC. There needs to be a minimum GPA of 2.0 and completion of a minimum of 18-semester units in an ADT major. Some of the majors include anthropology, biology, business, and physics, etc. This program offers multiple opportunities for students awaiting a transfer. Again for this program, it is important to make a plan early, so you can be ready for the transfer and you can look through all your options. Santa Ana Community College has other transferring tips on their website that can help at any community college,  like befriending your academic counselor, evaluate what four-year institution you want to attend, review articulation agreements between four-year institutions and your community college, and then go on college tours. Community College is a very valid and awesome option for seniors in high schools and these programs should be more known.

Make a plan

It is important to make a plan right from the start of your Community College and visit an academic advisor and find your major.  The TAG program can only be used once, so it very important to think through your decision. To help its’ students OCC has a “Transfer Day”   which is the largest fair in the fall semester with the representatives on campus from four-year colleges from California and other states. They also offer transfer counseling, workshops, application assistance, tutors, and appointment with admission representatives.  OCC is very dedicated to transferring their students to the best schools and they offer some of the best programs to meet that goal.
